Daily Mom Hug | Every Win Counts

Good morning, fam! Today let’s talk about why we count every little failure but do not give the same attention and energy to our successes.

For most of us, this is the result of people around us who only acknowledged our existence when we did something ‘wrong’, or ‘badly’, or when we’ve done something people outside of our family tells us is good, but the people in our family need to nitpick it.

Like when my grandfather came to my one and only theater performance of my high school career, despite all my years in choir, and instead of talking about how much he liked my performance, he complained that the big dance number we did in the middle didn’t match the song lyrics. And that’s not the only time he either outright ignored my work or criticized it.

So, yeah, I get it.

What I want you to do today is count all your successes.

Did you get up? Success.

Did you brush your hair? Your teeth? Shower? Success, success, success.

Did you take your meds? Eat? Hydrate? Success, success, success.

Did you remember something in a process that you usually forget? Success.

Did you find that thing you were looking for the other day? Success.

Did you not spill your coffee on your shirt? Success!

These are all little things, yes, but—and I can’t say this enough—they count.

Just as much, if not more than, your mistakes.

And it takes practice, kiddo. Because that learned behavior to tear yourself down took practice, too.

So, be kind to yourself, and just make an effort every day. Don’t kick yourself when you find that you’re falling back into the negative thought process. You have decades of work to undo… But you have decades more to make your life work in your favor.

And I know it seems like a big ask, this change in thinking, but you can do what I do, what my other kids now do: Use post-it notes. Stick one by your bed, in your bathroom, kitchen, at your desk, in your car… Wherever you need the reminder to learn this new skill, put a post-it there.

And if anyone asks, tell them your mom told you to do it.

Because I did.

Much love to you on this Thursday. You’ve got this, and I’ll be here every day until you don’t need me anymore.

Love,
Your Mom
